Fall 2010 Ready to Wear- The Best of Day Four & Five– New York Fashion Week

Marc Jacobs

Initials thoughts where ”wait – no, they cant be wearing flats!” gasp – “of course not, they’re like , um what you call them …kitten heels” OMG.

Leave it to Marc to kick the six inch heel trend out. Ladies if your a Trifter ( aka person who loves to thrift shop for vintage pieces) then you’ll love Marc’s latet collection , which I’d like to sum up High School Teacher Sophistication – clear eyeglasses, flats with socks, pants suits, skirts that hit below the knee and granny purses.

But lets not be too judgemental here, the last part of the show nicly progressed into “I’m working the hell out of these flats” with fur trimmed long dresses, bright yellow sweaters and velvet skirts like only Marc can do. Oh! and that transparent coat – leaves me a bit unsure – but its fashion as art and is what to be expected from the man that challenges us to be a little bit more original. Let’s get off the caravan people!

Donna Karen

Traditionally after 25 years you celebrate with Silver, but After 25 years of shows for Donna Karen, she decided to celebrate with black. The timeless shade – black never goes out of style and almost anyone can comfortably wear a LBD ( little black dress). In a way her collection was a futuristic look on the brand as well a homage to its previous years – cocoon styled coats, sultry leather lined dresses a equal mix of past and future.

Zac Posen

Zac Posen’s collection reminded me of the type of designs you’d see at a graduation for a Fashion school – a lot of theory some practicality but mostly a show that left didn’t leave people saying “I want that!” – their was no envy for the pieces.

Tracey Reese

There was no big bang idea behind the fall 2010 collection for Tracy Reesse, you could tell she kept the daydreaming out of this seasons look with a focus on ready-to-wearabilty and keeping up with trends - lace, layers and faux fur. But in a way the collection seemed like it could have been one of those retail GO collaborations with Target – Mass Appeal with slight infusions of the designers brand.

Fall 2010 Ready to Wear- The Best of Day Three– New York Fashion Week

Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang has somehow manged to consistently have the best fashion followers since his first show – fashion buyer, stylists and magazine editors alike all woo at his creations and most specifically his accessories that quickly become either it bags or it shoes.

I feel a bit ripped off this season – literally as many of the pieces looked like they were missing fabric in some places and too much fabric in other areas. It would be interesting to see how people wear these off the catwalk , stomach bearing and all.

Altuzarra

This is the third season for the newcomer and he’s out with a collection that says he more mature and definitely has staying power with clean cut lines, leather body suits and updated wool ponchos.

Peter Som

Peter Som came out with a strong showing of how to skillfully mix and match colors, patterns, and texture for a sultry and sophisticated look. He pulled it off with the use of flowy fabrics such as silk and chiffon.

Jason Wu

Something tells me that from Jason Wu’s Fall 2010 show he no longer wants to be seen as the designer who can just make ball gown dresses – so he’s switched things up a bit with a turn to more edge, rather than frills.

Boy by Band of Outsiders

Scott Sternberg showed us how he could tweak the interchangeable male/female wardrobe with American classics and a touch of color, or the lack thereof with bright yellows or models draped in all gray.

ADAM

For some reason this is what I expected the Alexander Wang show to look like – easy clothes that you can wear whenever. Shearling lined cropped leather jackets paired with jogging pants might not be very original , but originality doesn’t sell its adaptability that doesn’t and my guess is well see these pieces being sold out in stores.

Cynthia Steffe- Shaun Kearney seem to have taken the Wiliamsburg 2o something woman and decked her in some knee high thighs, flowy skirts and utilitarian coats such as hooded parkas and tweeds. These days the brand is becoming a mainstay on many retail chains as buyers are liking the revival of the brand to relate to the young and trendy shoppers.

Charlotte Ronson – The famous sibling has showed that she has staying power and with a collaboration from JCPenny under her belt she also knows what it means to make clothing that can easily transport into retail success. With this seasons line some of the pieces were a bit of a miss – that only the Olsens could carry off, such as the head-wraps/Turbans, but most everything else could be deconstructed to wear with your regular wardrobe staples and fit right in.

Summary of New York Fashion Week Fall 2010

Fall 2010 Ready to Wear- The Best of Day One – New York Fashion Week

10 AM – BCBGMaxAzria
Simple and realist are two words that Mrs. Azria used to describe this seasons collection. It was evident that everyone is in recession mode and designs are throwing out fantasies for wearabilty.

12pm- Vena Cava

The ladies of Vena Cava Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock wanted to take us to their version of Woodstock, where chic urbanite meets hippie. Not very believable in those heels and fishnets but still a good showing where they upped the femininity aspect this season with many flowing skirts or body hugging dresses.

5pm – Rachel Comey
Splashes of color and dark nudes – as the designer tried to make “fall feel lighter”

7pm – Chado Ralph Rucci

More classic pieces you’ll want to wear in your late 40s and 50s – which explains why both Martha Stewart and Andre Leon Tally was in the audience.

8pm – Erin Wasson + RVCA Presentation

The runway was set at the ABC Carpet & Home in Brooklyn and out came the models in what I like to call “soft rock”. There were plenty of earthy tones and an easy going California style infused with a bit of Moroccan influence.

a

Timothy writes: “I have always been interested in how we deal with aging in our hopelessly ‘youth oriented’ society. These women, now in their fifties, were once the reigning queens of American beauty. As ultimate icons of world-wide marketing, I knew their stories would be extraordinary and I wanted to hear what they had to say. For the portraits, I used my 8×10 Deardorff and also filmed a documentary of interviews and mise-en-scene.”

because it was aam… A bit outside of our financial realm.

Luckly for us the folks over at Rachel Roy heard us loud and clear!

We essentially told them look we love you but we can’t afford you,
bring your prices down to where we can still pay the rent at the end
of the month and we’re in business.

So they haven’t exactly brought prices down on the parent line Rachel
Roy- but they’ve done even better.

following in the footsteps of top designers like Marc Jacobs, the
company’s new sister line Rachel Rachel Roy is less expensive even
more wearable, trendy and full of energy!

I’m lovin it.
It’s only at Macys.

Shoulder pads are coming back into fashion?

Last year we saw Balenciaga bring back some serious attention to the shoulders with the sexy structured shoulder pad enhanced dresses and blouses. And now – it seems – everyone has been following suit.

I don’t know weather to be in awe or gasp!

I’m kidding, of course because I was too young back in the eighties to have a bad after taste from padded shoulder women suits I’m actually embracing this as a fashion challenge!

So even though I hate taking pictures of myself, I’ll try to post of photo or two wearing something with padded shoulders (when I get it – have to hit up my favorite Thrift Shop in Le Marais).

Because, as we all know : Life is for living , and fashion is simply for trying.

I’m very impressed by Hutson’s Ready to Wear, Fall 2009 season at New York Fashion Week, its definitely one of the best of the week.

I swear I wore this exact outfit last Monday to work! Except I wore gray booties and the top was H&M and the pants Zara – but the styling was dead on!

Since being in Paris I’ve learned an artful appreciation for black on black, being a New York Girl I was always madly in love with colors; from soft pastels to vivid brigts.

Living in Paris has placed my emphasis on style more on being elegantly subtle in a way that is effortless and doesn’t make you stand out.

Attention is placed more on the tailoring and qaullity of your clothes than on its uniqueness, or effect to make you an individual.

It’s interesting how life in Paris as contrast with life in New York , reflects the same thing as Fashion in Paris contrsted with Fashion in New York : Paris is purposefully elegantly slow and suble, while New York is purposlefuly chic fast and bold.

Paris is about bleing in.
New York is about standing out.

My sexy side is really embracing this look. What about you?

I want this skirt! – or is it a dress? Those shoes look uncomfortable as hell, she looks like she’s mad at the photographer.
